Right knowledge and correct tools are the basic requirements to complete an electrical repair work successfully. Following the step by step instructions and keeping the safety procedures in hand makes the task absolutely hassle free. Still, electrical repair work becomes one of the most dangerous tasks if taken up by an amateur.

Before going further in to the details of how to proceed with the electrical wiring and repair work, one should be well aware of the following basics.

One should be well educated about the local laws in regards of the electrical repair before beginning the task. In many cities, the law do not permit the unlicensed person to take up any electrical wiring or repair work, not even the home owner. Faulty wiring techniques, defective electrical appliances and substandard materials become the prime cause behind many house fires. Thus beware of these perils. Severe consequences are the result of smallest mistakes. There do exist an electrical code to maintain the uniformity and the consistency of any electrical repair work. One should always match up or exceed to these standards while doing the job. Last but not the least, the licensed electricians are the most trusted and reliable people assigned for such jobs. Hire them if you have slightest confusion, or at least take their advice before beginning your job.

Step by step instructions to take up any electrical wiring and repair work:

Locate and switch off the electrical circuit attached to the outlet you need to work upon. Then remove the receptacle box. If you want to replace the electrical outlet, cut the wires. You must choose the correct electrical outlet replacement. Now connect the new electrical outlet to the existing wiring. The wiring done should meet the standards to avoid any mishap in future. If possible, get your work inspected by an experienced and licensed electrician. Then put the switch on to test your repair work.

A little panning and lot of knowledge can make your repair work a success. Still, do not try your hands on such errand if you have slightest doubt in mind.

Electricity can be very dangerous and should never be tampered with by non-professionals. Neither should you place your trust and safety in the hands of informal service providers who claim to have the necessary skills and offer their services at much lower costs. Remember that you need a licensed electrical contractor company with professionally certified electricians for the design, installation and maintenance of electrical systems for your residential, commercial and industrial sites.

Aside from basic residential, commercial and industrial electrical systems, electrical contractor companies also design, install and maintain electrical systems for hurricane preparation and for lightning and surge protection. This includes generator installation. They do upgrading and servicing of electrical panels. They also do regular electric inspection as well as electric repairs and maintenance. Such repair and maintenance work includes servicing commercial lights such as parking lot lighting, landscape lighting and even street lights. For emergencies, electrical contractor companies are prepared to make service calls with properly equipped bucket trucks.

The electric inspection done by licensed electrical contractor companies may also be done to comply with the requirements of government laws or codes. In Miami-Dade County, for example, the 40-Year Building Inspection Program requires structural and electrical safety inspection and certification for all buildings aged 40 years and above, to be renewed every ten years. The only exemptions to the requirement are buildings measuring 2,000 square feet or below, buildings occupied by ten people or less, family homes and duplexes.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) of the United States governs all electrical contractor companies and their electricians in the country. Electrical contractor companies nationwide are categorized into various types, depending on their specializations. They are the inside electrical contractors; the line electrical contractors or outside electrical contractors; and the voice/data/video (VDV) electrical contractors or integrated building systems (IBS) electrical contractors.

You should call on inside electrical contractors for all electrical work within the property boundary lines of industrial, commercial or residential, whether indoors or outdoors.

You should call on line electrical contractors or outside electrical contractors for the more sophisticated electrical work involving the high voltage power transmission infrastructure and line starting from a main power plant all the way to power substations, power facilities and power users

You should call on voice/data/video (VDV) electrical contractors or integrated building systems (IBS) electrical contractors for electrical work on various low-voltage power installations such as back-up power, energy-efficient lighting, climate control, telecommunications, fiber optics, wireless networks and security systems.

Electricians first join electrical contractor companies as apprentice electricians. They earn wages while going through a training program of three to five years covering electrical systems installation, modification, repair and maintenance. This combines on-the-job training given by licensed journeymen electricians with class lessons.

After the training, apprentice electricians can become licensed journeyman electricians by complying with state requirements. Upon getting a license, they shall be authorized for installing, modifying, maintaining and repairing electrical power systems, including the reading of blueprints, installation and troubleshooting of control wiring from drawings, and termination of cables.

Licensed journeyman electricians, in turn, can later be appointed as estimators. An estimator’s responsibilities includes calculating the entire cost of the project, from materials to labor and overhead, as well as estimating the duration of the work. These figures are used in the bid submitted by the electrical contractor company for a project and in that project’s working schedule and budget.

An estimator can eventually progress to being a project supervisor. He is then expected to handle the project’s entire workforce, making sure that quality control and safety standards are complied with and deadlines are met. He is also responsible for the submission of all relevant forms and reports.

With a full range of highly qualified licensed electricians, a professional electrical contractor company is truly your only wise choice for all your electrical service needs.

Electrical contractors are companies that employ professional electricians. Electrical contractor companies need to be licensed in order to be able to design, install and maintain electrical systems of residential, commercial and industrial clients. Their electricians need to be similarly certified.

Among the services provided by electrical contractor companies are electrical inspection; residential, industrial and commercial light systems; interior lighting; exterior lighting such as street lights, parking lot lighting and landscape lighting; generator installation; electrical panel upgrade and service; electric repairs and troubleshooting; replacement of electrical fixtures; hurricane preparation and lightning and surge protection. They offer service calls with accompanying bucket truck service. Their professionally certified electricians look after the client’s electrical circuits, wiring, fuses, breakers, outlets and switches.

In certain areas, there are laws or codes related to electrical systems that need to be met, and electrical contractor companies help their clients comply with such laws or codes. One example is the 40-Year Building Inspection Program of Miami-Dade County. Under the 40-Year Building Inspection Program, structural and electrical safety inspection and certification should be done every ten years for all buildings that are aged 40 and above. The electrical safety inspection is required to be done only by licensed electrical contractor companies. The exemptions include buildings that are 2,000 square feet and below, as well as buildings with ten or less occupants, duplexes and family homes.

All electrical contractor companies in all parts of the United States are subject to the National Electrical Code (NEC). There are three classifications of US electrical contractor companies. These are inside electrical contractors; outside electrical contractors, also called line electrical contractors; and integrated building systems (IBS) electrical contractors, also called voice/data/video (VDV) electrical contractors.

Inside electrical contractors do not work only indoors. They cover all the electrical needs of residential, commercial and industrial clients inside the property boundary lines.

Outside electrical contractors are not simply electrical contractors that work outdoors. They are also referred to as line electrical contractors because they take care of building and maintaining the high voltage power transmission infrastructure line that is sourced from a power plant and is sent out to power substations, power facilities and, finally, power users.

In contrast, integrated building systems (IBS) electrical contractors, who are also referred to as voice/data/video (VDV) electrical contractors, work on low-voltage power installations. This includes telecommunications, climate control, back-up power, energy-efficient lighting, wireless networks, fiber optics and security systems.

Electrical contractor companies classify their electricians as entry level apprentice electricians, journeyman electricians, estimators and project supervisors.

Apprentice electricians earn wages even as they go through a three to five year training program. Their classroom lessons and hands on training cover the whole process of electrical installation, modification, maintenance and repair.

Those who have completed the apprenticeship go through the requirements for state licensing in order to become journeyman electricians. Once licensed, they are expected to be able to read blueprints, install control wiring and troubleshoot them on the basis of drawings, and terminate cables. They are also ready to handle the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of power systems.

A journeyman electrician can eventually be promoted as an estimator. The estimator calculates the costing and duration of the entire project for submission in bidding and for use in the project’s budgeting and scheduling.

The estimator can look forward to being promoted as project supervisor. The project supervisor is expected to manage the entire workforce, ensure compliance with quality control and safety standards, monitor the meeting of deadlines, and submit required reports to upper management.

A good electrical contractor company is not only properly licensed and insured but also employs only fully qualified and licensed electricians with experience and expertise. To ensure the safety of your family or your employees and clients, make sure you get the services of a reputable and trustworthy electrical contractor company in your area.
